Hook front 1940's style N-1 Naval deck jacket made from a cotton broken twill fabric. With two external 'D-style' hand-warmer patch pockets, wool felt lining and features inset cuffs and a furry collar with storm flap. 'N.B.H.D. Alt.Cali 1969' print on back.
The original design utilized an exposed zip front closure. In very cold weather on the decks of the naval ships any ocean spray would immediately freeze and the zippers wouldn't function well. The design was later changed and included a button front flap that covers the zipper. However, the deck personnel wore heavy gloves that made the buttons almost impossible to use. Thus the design was changed again to include the hook closure, the design of which was borrowed from fireman's coats of the era. Naturally, firemen wore heavy gloves and were often coated in water from head to toe and, in winter, this water froze to their coats, yet they could fasten or unfasten their coats without great difficulty. The fireman's coats, however, fastened not with buttons or zippers but with a metal hook-style clasp fastener that pivoted on a hinge pin and folded around and through a metal bracket. It was this same fastener design that the U. S. Navy incorporated into the Hook-Front Deck Jackets.
